第14回 セント・パトリックス・デイ・
パレード 熊本2020 につきまして
新型コロナウイルス感染拡大防止として、
パレード参加者の安全・安心のために
パレードが中止となりました。
◆セント・パトリックス・デイ・パレードとは
アイルランドにキリスト教を広めた、聖パトリックの命日にあたる3月17日を中心に行われるセント・パトリックス・デイ・パレードは、今や首都ダブリンだけでなく米国、カナダ、豪州、ロシア、ドイツ、ノルウェー、アジアではお隣の韓国・ソウルなど世界各地で開催される国際的なパレードです。参加者は身体のどこかにアイルランドのシンボルカラーである「緑」を身につけ目抜き通りを音楽に合わせて行進し、歌い踊り豊かな文化や伝統を共に祝う日となっています。熊本は明治24年に、五高に英語教師として赴任したアイルランド人の父を持つラフカディオ・ハーン(小泉八雲)を通してアイルランドと強く結ばれています。今年も関係者が集まり実行委員会を結成、多くの市民と手をとり14回目を開催します。
◆The Roots of Irishman Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo)
Saint Patrick spread Christianity throughout Ireland hundreds of years ago, yet every year on March 17th, the anniversary of his death, Irish people get together to commemorate the life and work of this great man, the patron saint of Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day is also a celebration of Ireland and Irish hentage and so St. Patrick’s Day parades are held not only across Ireland and its capital, Dublin, but all across the world; international parades can be seen in the United States, Canada, Australia, Russia, Germany, Norway and South Korea. Japan has also hosted St. Patrick’s Day parades, and this year is no exception!
Kumamoto has had strong links with Ireland since 1891 when the Irishman, and famous author, Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) was appointed to work in Kumamoto as a teacher. And so, thanks to the hard work of many dedicated locals, along with the support of various local businesses, Kumamoto will host its14th St. Patrick’s Day Parade this year. Why don’t you come along to watch, or walk in, the parade? Many people will gather to march, sing and dance to the music as we parade down the main street wearing happy smiles and an assortment of green – Ireland’s symbolic colour which boldly echoes the rich traditions, unique culture and soothing scenery of Ireland.
